What to Wear: Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

My family has never been a “formal” dress kind of family for any holiday. I personally err on the side of classic and comfortable when it comes to my holiday attire. This, to me, means ponte pants, nice sweater, boots or heels, or jeans, a nice top and flats.

I dress, in the words of a few, dressy casual.

This year, like the past couple of years (excepting the year my Nana passed), we’ll be traveling up to New Jersey to spend with my Brother-in-law’s in-laws (his wife’s parents – who are absolutely lovely and put up an amazing Thanksgiving spread).

So even though most days off from work, you’ll find me in leggings, boots and comfy sweaters, for family affairs, I generally step it up just a notch or two without going full-on “business casual”

So here are four comfy, and slightly dressed up casual outfits that’ll be in my suitcase for the holidays.

Outfit 1 – Butter top and Ponte Pants

{ Top: Nordstrom | Pants: Loft | Shoes: Old Navy, similar | necklace: Nordstrom }

I saw this top on another blog and it is one of my favorite purchases this fall. It’s super comfy, cozy and with the right shoes – either boots, booties or even flats/mules- it’s perfectly dressy casual for a nice Thanksgiving feast, but can also be dressed down if needed.

Outfit 2 – Ponte Pants and Knotted sweater

{Sweater: Nordstrom | Pants: Loft | necklace: J.Crew | Shoes: J.Crew}

Another comfortable find is the Gibson knotted fleece pullover which I picked up early this fall. I have it in Olive and Heathered grey – both would work with either knee-high boots or nice flats (as shown) or heeled booties.

Outfit 3 – Ruffled Hem Sweatshirt with Jeans

{Sweatshirt: Nordstrom, similar | Jeans: Old Navy | boots: Macy’s, similar | Necklace: J.Crew, similar}

If you’re apt to wear jeans,  a fun, cozy top, and nice flats. Personally, Jeans are uncomfortable for me after a large meal (hi Food Baby hahaha) so I err on the side of Leggings or ponte pants. Just me?

Outfit 4 – Jeans with Tippi sweater

{sweater: J.Crew | Jeans: Old Navy  | boots: Macy’s, similar | Necklace: J.Crew}

This is one of my favorite outfits for fall, I have the Tippi sweater in four colors – it’s a solid piece and a staple in my winter wardrobe because it’s so versatile for work and play. (Today the Tippi – and everything else at J.Crew.com – is 40% off with code THANKU!!)

I’m not a dress kind of gal for Thanksgiving – mostly because I grew up in VT and if it wasn’t snowing, it was usually in the 30’s and hardly dress weather. On top of that, I still haven’t figured out how to wear tights with dresses so it doesn’t look like I’m 12. That being said, I love this swing dress, and this pretty ruffle shoulder sweater dress if you’re looking for something a step up that’s comfortable and casual.

What’s your holiday wardrobe go to??

What I wore: Casual Friday in All Navy

I’ve never met a mono-color outfit I didn’t like. Granted, I haven’t been brave enough to try the white on white outfit and really the only other ones I’ve tried have been all navy or all black. This casual Friday all navy outfit with accents in leopard print shoes and the striped pleats didn’t disappoint either. All navy ftw!

I picked up this adorable french terry top during the big Nordstrom Anniversary sale in August and lo, it’s been too flipping warm to wear it. But it is quite perfectly, a fantastic casual Friday outfit or good for kicking around on the weekends when you want to look…slightly more put together than just leggings (as most of my weekends are spent).

The top itself, I was worried about because the cut to the pleats is a little funky and I think it’s probably not the MOST flattering of tops but man, is it comfy as all heck. The pleats are kind of a pain – unlike most of my other peplum/pleated tops that are more of a crepe type material, these are more of a stiff cotton so they get wrinkled super easily and don’t like to lay flat and look pretty like they should. Silly pleats.

What I Wore: Twist Front Sweater

So when I buy something, I tend to buy it in multiple colors. I have no fewer than FOUR of my favorite JCrew Factory Daybreak dresses (three get worn consistently, one shrunk terribly and one I bought second hand off poshmark…so five). The same was true when I saw this beautiful twist front sweater on Pinterest. I fell in serious love with this sweater and it’s been a fantastic addition to my closet for fall…in two different colors.

The sweater itself is available in multiple colors and is soft and almost fleece-y like. It runs big so I did size down, and it comes in petite sizes as well.  I picked up the dark grey and Olive Green – both fit into my wardrobe seamlessly.

There are so many fun ways to wear this sweater for fall – with jeans and boots, with leggings and casual sneakers while running errands on a weekend, or dressed up for work like I did with nice pants (in my case these are my favorite Ponte pants) and a pair of flats.

Now that there’s finally fall-like weather here, well, you might see this one again if you’re following me on instagram.

What I Wore: Weekend Casual

This weekend had some pretty amazing weather for an August in Maryland. The high seventies, zero humidity. Completely unlike Maryland weather for this time of year.

Friday night, I kicked off the weekend with a solid closet clean-out (see some of my listings on Poshmark with more to come!) and was super excited to come across an old black Lululemon racerback tank I had. Even working moms need to have casual attire and I’m a HUGE fan of athleisure (though you probably wouldn’t know it from my mostly office friendly outfit posts).

This outfit was super comfortable and perfect attire to hit up the Annapolis 10 miler expo, a nearby brewery and run some errands in Annapolis with the boys. As long as the weather is cooperating, this will probably be a weekend wardrobe regular (at least for the time being!).

Fun fact: I bought these pants pre-Body Back to replace an old pair that tore (damned chub rub rubbing holes through the thighs of my favorite pants) and now, they’re too loose in the waist by a solid couple of inches… Even after I dry them. *sigh*

Happy Wednesday my friends!!

Sidewalk Skirt Casual

Monday was a pseudo-casual Monday since it was a half-day before the Tuesday holiday. Needless to say, it was a perfect opportunity to bust out one of my favorite skirts. This is a little more casual than I usually go for a non-friday, but like I said, half day and half the office was off for the day so why not?

[skirt (on sale!)  | Tee | Necklace | Sandals (old, similar)]

I love the sidewalk skirt for its casual dress up and dress down look. One thing I should note about my style is that when I find something I love, I tend to buy it in multiples. For instance, I have about six of these skirts – three for summer, and three for fall/winter. Same with the sidewalk dress from JCrew – I have it in five colors.

….

Whoops?

I digress, dress up with a pair of heels or dress down with sandals and a tee like I did- it’s a super versatile skirt for any weekend or business casual environment during any season 🙂

Do you have an item that you love and buy in multiples???

What I Wore: Festive Copper

How has it been nearly a month since my last blog post? I have half a dozen drafts sitting in my backlog but no time/energy to wrap them up and schedule them. Maybe I’m over thinking this blogging thing but some of my favorite bloggers have such beautiful photos and images whereas I’m in selfie-city. Somedays I feel like such an amateur. Either way, setting the bar low for myself. Blog one time per week. Two would be fantastic, three would be a dream. Let’s see if I can get my act together!

I know JCrew has gotten some crap lately regarding their quality and that , but I got a beautiful Tippi sweater on a black Friday sale and I’ve gotta say, I’m in love and want at least ten more in different colors.

In other news, this weekend we’re going to be in full cooking baking, gift wrapping, holiday movie watching mode. Shopping is ALMOST done and I am READY for Christmas morning with my two favorite people. Cue “matching” pjs, mimosas, a festive brunch and all of the Christmas movies with Little man. It’s going to be a fun day 🙂

Tell me about your favorite parts of the holiday season! Any great finds that you’ve found through the Holiday Shopping season?

What I wore: Girls Night Out

Tuesday night I had a lady date to celebrate a pal’s birthday. I don’t usually stay in work clothes for a night out unless it’s a work straight to happy hour type thing, usually I’m all about comfort – give me ponte pants/leggings or give me death but the other night was different.

But I was really digging this outfit. I loved the simplicity of it and kind of wanted to show it off. Also – there was a rush to get home, get E settled and head out to meet my pal – the desire to get out the door was stronger than the desire to change my clothes and try on six different outfits which I knew I would inevitably do.

Sorry for the serious lack of posts – the struggle between training well for a race, being a FT Working parent and the need for solo time to decompress is a fickle balance and one that, a year and a half after going back to work, I’m still working to figure out. I do love these easy what I wore type posts though – my issue is I never remember to take a picture until I’m home or changing into my running clothes. No bueno!

That all being said – stay tuned for some fun ideas I have in the works. And as always… find me on twitter, facebook, and instagram. I’m still relatively active most days!

What I Wore: Camel and Stripes

I’m lusting for fall weather that I know is right around the corner. So the other day when I saw morning temperatures were only in the 60’s, I grabbed the latest cardigan I picked up on our most recent outlet jaunt.

I had happy hour plans that night so I wanted to be sure I would be comfortable. That was the great thing about this outfit – it totally took me from office to happy hour without much effort. The sweater, tank combo was perfect for casual Friday and the tank, necklace, sandal combo was great for casual happy hour at Greene Turtle.

Another plus? I can totally make this a more business casual outfit by trading out the jeans for black pants or a pencil skirt. Win!

Casual Tuesday

After a weekend of travel and bundling up, I tried to put a little effort into my outfit today – even though there was only 2 of us in the office for most of the day – with the grey weather and the next two days gearing up to be sleet and snow and rain and more snow, I decided it was time to bring a little brightness to my wardrobe.

I took advantage of the tax free shopping in Vermont as well as the spring line at Old Navy to get some springy looking clothes. I figure if I will it to be spring it will be right? Maybe?

The sweater is a little more red than pink in that picture but…whatever.

Pants – Old Navy| T-shirt – JCrew (similar) | necklace – JCrew (similar) | Cardigan – Old Navy | Flats – Tory Burch

 I think I need more in this poppy/coral color. I’ll be revisiting Old Navy soon. They had some really cute spring finds. Kind of hard to shop for spring when you’re about to get 6″ of snow and nearly slip out trying to get into your car because of all the stupid ice.

What did the outfit look like on me?

Pardon my selfie-ing.

Dinner in St. Michaels

Welcome back to the real world kids.

I got the chance to skip Monday at work kind of – we had a company retreat over in St. Michaels where we stayed overnight Sunday. A few of us got massages at the 5 Gables Inn and Spa where we all stayed. After, a colleague and I checked out Gina’s (a delicious little eatery that Hubs and I checked out a couple years ago on our last trip to St. Michaels), and the St. Michaels Winery and then we had a team dinner at Ava’s – a delicious little pizzeria on the main drag in St. Michaels.

It was unseasonably warm for January on Sunday night. Since I didn’t know where we were going when I packed, so I packed pseudo-dressy-ish. Thankfully, I didn’t feel overdressed at all, I was warm (enough) – until my colleagues opened the window in our private room (BRRRR) and we had to walk back after a rain.

Of course, I came and remembered I had to register for the St. Michaels Half before the price went up. I’m excited to actually train for a race again – and I’m hoping to schedule a mid-late summer metric or full century so I simultaneously train for a long road race and a long bike race just to see if it’s doable and if I like the long bike ride distances. You know, in hopes that I’ll have the desire to do a half ironman next summer.
