The other night I popped into my local Lululemon in search of new running crops – a birthday gift from hubs but he told me to go buy them myself. My beloved pair of old-school speed crops are nearing their end (I’ve already had to patch a hole in an unfortunate seam once and another tiny hole recently popped up as well) – they’ve been through the ringer since I picked them up in 2010 as a first purchase when I worked at Lululemon. Back in 2014, I had to get them hemmed because I fell and tore a hole in the knee – then they became the perfect length.
Let me give you a little background though. I stand tall at a sturdy 5’1″ on a good day. I get really hot when I run, so I prefer crops even when it’s like 45 degrees. Also, while I wear shorts in the summer and warm weather, my legs get a lot of chub-rub and chafe so I put off making the switch as long as I can.
My first mission was to find the crop version of the tights I bought at Christmas because those ones are on point. Unfortunately, I came across a conundrum. All the crops were like pants. I mean this isn’t a bad thing if you’re looking for tights or leggings – you can save money by buying the cropped version because hi! Pants.
I loved the feel of these but they were too long and could not be hemmed. Wamp wamp.
Most crops, come in at 19-23″ in length. Many brands, I’m looking at you Lululemon, add mesh on the calf for extra ventilation. A nice feature for sure, buuuuuttttt, I was advised that these ones I loved probably couldn’t be I probably couldn’t hem them.
I get it. But short girls want mesh calves too, yo!
So I tried on three other pairs of crops. One was too tight. One didn’t make it over my thighs – the other was just right. Well, just right once they get hemmed about four inches. Eventually, I’d love to try the wunder under luxtreme – as they’re probably fairly close to what I have now and love.
I should note that I hate cheap feeling leggings I know a lot of people SWEAR by Old Navy leggings or leggings from Amazon, but they’ve never really done it for me. Lululemon is my go to, but Under Armour are a close second. You may think I’m crazy for spending a stupid amount of $$$ on running tights but for as much as I run, and knowing that the leggings i bought back in 2010-2011 when I worked for lulu that have LASTED…. I’m willing to spend the money for good quality.
And for the record, I do have a couple of pairs of heat gear leggings from UA, including a pair that has mesh behind the legs. They also have a hole on the inside seam that popped up less than a year after I had them so they’re out of the rotation but short girls CAN wear mesh! If there’s any that I need to try please leave your favorites in the comments!
