August/September Stitch Fix Reveal

A couple weeks ago (this is belated but whatever), I got my August/September Stitch Fix box in the mail. I wasn’t quite sure what to ask for – I’ve kind of been loving the cold shoulder trend and wanted to be a little, dare I say, adventurous in what I asked for?

Alas, this fix? Did not pass go. This is the second or third 0/5 I’ve gotten. I usually get a 1/5 (even if I love most things, usually if I love the style but the fit is off, I’ll consider it a win) so a 0/5 is a BFD for me. There were a couple of pieces that I did LIKE but already had something too similar in my closet for me to spend the money on them. So i guess not a TOTAL loss but….I was underwhelmed, to say the least.

I typically ask for business casual wear, pieces that can translate for office or weekend. This? Not quite it.

Kaileigh Rosella Cold Shoulder top $46

stitch fix cold shoulder top

I did NOT love this. This was a total miss. Tie sleeves don’t do anything for me, nor are they… a big win for the office in my book.

Verdict: Return

August Mist Shyann Cold Shoulder Top –  $46

This was an even bigger miss. The roll tab sleeves were awkward, the look that they styled it with was just… terrible (window pane top with window pane pants?! Whuuutt???). I just… nope.

Verdict: Return.

TK Angiana Woven Back Sleeveless Pullover – $58

Okay, so I really liked this one. I did. BUT, the fit wasn’t quite right and it was really pricey for what it was and I have at LEAST one near-identical top so I couldn’t justify it. Womp womp. So close.

Verdict: Return

Colette Chavez Pop Color Cuff Knit Top – $48

Ufff. I wanted to love this. I did. The pink was super cute and a nice pop to an otherwise basic top. Buuutttt, I’m not going to pay nearly $50 for a top that looks like one I already have that I paid $15 for from Target that’s going on it’s 2nd or 3rd season (unusual for Target basics!).

Verdict: Return

MIA Casey Leather Peep Toe Booties – $99

Okay, so I did ask for a peep-toe bootie. These were REALLY cute. BUT. I didn’t LOVE them which for $100? It better be real shoe love. Also, these were more brown, I was looking for cognac/tan or black instead of a dark brown. M’eh.

Verdict: Return (wamp wamp)

So there you have it. 0/5.

I do love getting Stitch Fix boxes. I do. I think I need to check out my Pinterest boards, and really think about what I want to ask for. If you’re interested in trying out Stitch Fix, I do recommend trying it once. At the very least, I love getting the style cards and I always get new ideas on how to style pieces in my wardrobe in ways I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.

10 Beauty Products I Can’t Live without

In the recent years, largely since I went back to work after baby, I started to care a little more about my looks. Not so much in comparison to many others, but more in a how can I make myself put together without spending a lot of time on it care. Not to mention, I’m in my mid-thirties now and surely I won’t look like I’m in my mid-20’s forever (or so I’ve been told) so I gotta keep myself looking pretty.

So I’ve found – over a lot of trial and error, my can’t-live-without’s. As little man has grown, my time to make myself pretty has diminished. Greatly. So I’ve simplified my get ready for work routine. I’m not alone though, I bet every working mom – any mom really – would say the same. There’s never any time. There’s beauty in a simplified routine (pun mostly intended) and I’m so glad I’ve found a routine that works for me.

I typically have 45 minutes to an hour to get dressed, get little man dressed, get myself dressed and made up and get out the door (hopefully with a packed lunch and breakfast). There is rarely a day when I don’t at least have mascara on – even on weekends.

I should also add, that I don’t spend tons on my appearance – as I’ve discovered through trial and error and reading reviews – you really don’t have to.  Most of my favorites are purchased at Ulta or Target because that’s where I can afford and I’m not about to drop $50 on mascara or $60 on overpriced lipstick.

So here are my ten products that I use/can’t live without.

Skincare: Moisturizer | Night Mask | Cleanser

I don’t have a huge routine when it comes to skincare – I use moisturizer every day (Boots Botanical Moisturizer  (with SPF 15) ) once or twice a week I use this  Pacifica Wake Up Beautiful Night Mask at night which leaves my skin with a healthy glow when I wake up. Of course I have my cleanser and once in a blue moon (aka when I remember) toner. I love the Yes to Grapefruit cleanser which I use every day.

Make up

Primer | Bronzer | Eye Liner | Eye Shadow | Mascara | Mascara Primer

My makeup routine can be done in less than ten minutes. I prime with this ELF primer (the price point is so right), use Benefit Dallas bronzer for a nice glow, (Benefit pressed foundation with a little blush in the winter months), Sophie Kashuk eye liner, eye shadow and then mascara primer and mascara. I love the Falsies mascara by Maybelline which took me a while to find (trial and error folks) but now it’s my go to. I never used mascara primer before I got a sample of it in a Target Beauty box a few months ago now I can’t live without it.

Hair

Heat Protectant | Dry Shampoo

I recently got my hair highlighted for the first time in over five years. Thanks to my stylist, I use this purple shampoo (how did I never know of this?!) and I started (shame on me) using the amazing CHI Heat Protectant – if you use a straightener or curling iron and aren’t using this, shame on you.

Finally, since I don’t wash my hair every day, I couldn’t live without dry shampoo – I used to use Not My Mother’s brand which was good… but then I read something about Batiste and gave it a try and it is so much better. I use this on days typically when I don’t workout (otherwise I will give my hair a good wash) but if I showered and then went to spin class, I won’t still shampoo again, so I’ll shower cap it up and use this.

Voila! My must have products – that I love and use every day.

What I Wore: Weekend Casual

This weekend had some pretty amazing weather for an August in Maryland. The high seventies, zero humidity. Completely unlike Maryland weather for this time of year.

Friday night, I kicked off the weekend with a solid closet clean-out (see some of my listings on Poshmark with more to come!) and was super excited to come across an old black Lululemon racerback tank I had. Even working moms need to have casual attire and I’m a HUGE fan of athleisure (though you probably wouldn’t know it from my mostly office friendly outfit posts).

This outfit was super comfortable and perfect attire to hit up the Annapolis 10 miler expo, a nearby brewery and run some errands in Annapolis with the boys. As long as the weather is cooperating, this will probably be a weekend wardrobe regular (at least for the time being!).

Fun fact: I bought these pants pre-Body Back to replace an old pair that tore (damned chub rub rubbing holes through the thighs of my favorite pants) and now, they’re too loose in the waist by a solid couple of inches… Even after I dry them. *sigh*

Happy Wednesday my friends!!

August Obsessions

Happy August friends! I took a break in July, but my monthly obsessions (aka top five things I’m loving at the moment) is back!

august obsessionsAugust Obsessions

1. Pacifica – Wake Up Beautiful Night Mask.  Okay, beauty products aren’t typically my thing but I grabbed this on a whim from Target one day and I’m obsessed. I use it a couple times per week after I shower (I shower at night). Don’t rinse, but leave it over night and wake up with smooth, glowy skin. Seriously. It’s my favorite.
2. Cottony workout tanks. I bought one from Fit4Mom (seen here) that I LOVE. I got this one from Old Navy recently for like $10 – I’m super jazzed. Also, love these ones from Under Armour and one similar to this Pima Cotton one from lululemon but for the budget friendly gals, check out this one (in multiple colors!) from Old Navy. I know you’re not supposed to wear cotton to work out, but these light weight cotton blend tops are super comfy to work out – especially for my Body Back workouts.
3. Bed Head – Dumb Blonde Purple Shampoo. So recently, I went blonde. I used to be blonde – somewhat naturally. But after I got pregnant, I stopped dying/highlighting my hair. Alas, I wanted a change and found the BEST stylist in Pasadena, and she recommended purple shampoo to keep my hair from getting brassy. Of all the times I’ve previously, highlighted my hair – no one ever recommended this and I’m really liking the way it’s protecting my hair color.
4. Swing dresses. Specifically this one from Old Navy. And of course, one of my favorites – the lularoe Carly dress. Super comfy. Dress up with block heels. Dress down with sandals for casual Friday. Give it a nice, long statement necklace and boom – dressed in like…five minutes. Easy peasy.

5. Cold Shoulder tops. I really, really tried to not love this trend. But I do. I have this dress from Amazon, a couple of cute tops from LOFT and I love them all. All of them. They’re flirty, easy to dress up and just… on point for the summer. Don’t judge (i know this trend has a lot of naysayers 😉 ).

Giving the Cold Shoulder

There are many trends when it comes to fashion that I kind of… raise my eyebrows at. Wide-legged pants. Off the shoulder tops (as much as I wish this worked, it’s simply not practical for me). Cropped anything (specifically cropped tops), midi skirts (I wish. I’m too petite), but there was one from this summer that kind of grew on me…

The cold shoulder top. AKA the less annoying sister of the Off the Shoulder top.

I was skeptical initially because some styles are just…over the top and impractical for those of us who need to support the ladies. But, once I tried them on, I really really liked the subtle flirtatiousness of the style. Granted, some are REALLY over the top and frilly, but LOFT, IMO has been killing it with the cold shoulder look this summer.

Black and white is such a classic, classic look and one that I wear often – I loved this find from Loft. It’s great with a pair of shorts on the weekend OR a nice pair of pants for work. I spotted my HR director wearing white jeans dressed up – previously a “friday only” type of piece for me but I dressed these up last week and it worked perfectly for my business casual office.

Here are a few of my favorite cold shoulder tops lurking around the interwebs right now:

What about you? Have you tried the “cold shoulder” trend? What are some trends that you love (or love to hate?)?

Sidewalk Skirt Casual

Monday was a pseudo-casual Monday since it was a half-day before the Tuesday holiday. Needless to say, it was a perfect opportunity to bust out one of my favorite skirts. This is a little more casual than I usually go for a non-friday, but like I said, half day and half the office was off for the day so why not?

[skirt (on sale!)  | Tee | Necklace | Sandals (old, similar)]

I love the sidewalk skirt for its casual dress up and dress down look. One thing I should note about my style is that when I find something I love, I tend to buy it in multiples. For instance, I have about six of these skirts – three for summer, and three for fall/winter. Same with the sidewalk dress from JCrew – I have it in five colors.

….

Whoops?

I digress, dress up with a pair of heels or dress down with sandals and a tee like I did- it’s a super versatile skirt for any weekend or business casual environment during any season 🙂

Do you have an item that you love and buy in multiples???

June Obsessions

How is it already the end of June?! Last weekend I was in New Orleans for work so I pushed this off a week. New Orleans itself was pretty fantastic – my boss and I had the chance to speak as a keynote at a conference that was just…a mind blowing experience. Plus, unlike last time, I kept my drinking in check (while still having a great time) and did not in fact, get sick on Bourbon Street. I consider that a major win.

Here are the five things I’m loving this month

  1. Lululemon Hotty Hot Short (Long) – I needed some new running shorts and picked up these shorts before Zooma – they are absolutely fantastic.
  2. Lularoe Carly dresses – I wrote about this dress last year – but I sized down TWO more sizes and found the perfect fit. Seriously, this dress is flattering, comfortable and can be dressed up or down. I’m obsessed. I scored my favorite one (it’s a burgundy red) off Poshmark at about $15-20 off retail.
  3. Benefit Blush/Bronzer –  It’s the perfect blush/bronzer for the summer. I spent some time at Ulta recently after I ran out of my Bare Minerals blush, this was the winner for me, especially since I use their powdered foundation.
  4. JCrew Factory Sidewalk Skirt – I love, love, love this skirt. It’s so versatile, and I have 3 skirts for summer (striped, olive and orange) and 3 for winter in wool (camel, black and teal). They are my favorite for sure.
  5. Loft Cold Shoulder top – Blush colored, perfect ruffles, super flattering, this was an easy and feminine option to try out the cold shoulder trend. I was reluctant at first BUT I’m super obsessed.

BONUS: I just got three super cute dresses from Amazon for less than $20 each. This striped maxi dressthis off the shoulder dress and this swing style tank dress– all of which are super cute and comfy.  Stay tuned for a full review!

May Obsessions

Happy Friday my friends!!

How is it already Memorial Day weekend? How are we here at the start of summer?? I’m struggling with how fast time is flying by, this time next year little man will be graduating pre-school and heading off to Kindergarten (assuming, we don’t redshirt him which may be an option pending how the next year goes with some of his developmental challenges we’ve been working through).

Anyhow, I digress. Last month I had a blast sharing what I was loving, so I figured I’d make it a monthly thing on the last Friday of the month! Here are my five current loves/obsessions:

  1. These Old Navy sandals. At first I wasn’t so sure. But then I started wearing them, and now I’m obsessed. They’re the perfect dress up, dress down summer sandal and are pretty comfortable to boot. Bless you Old Navy, you’ve been ON POINT for shoes lately.
  2. This pretty peplum back Pleione top. I bought it in red and black (florals) and kept the black floral. Red’s not prominent in my wardrobe but I just didn’t see myself wearing it as much. It does a run big (but narrow in the shoulders and sleeves) I could have gone either way with the Medium or small but chose the small because the medium kind of drowned me in the bodice. Solid colors are on sale so check those out (I love the magenta!).
  3. This Athleta tank. Which is my new favorite workout top, and currently on sale! It’s perfect for my strength days, my running days and my yoga workouts. I have it in white, but clearly, need it in more colors.
  4. All of the Polar Water summer flavors. Like…all of them. If you can get your hands on some of these bad boys, please do. They are FANTASTIC.
  5. This dress. Times a million. I have it in black as a short sleeve but recently got navy in the tank style. It’s super flattering, comfortable and just the perfect summer basic.

Three things I’m lusting over…

This eyelet top. Perfect flirty summer top. Would be cute with some pink or olive pants for a date night or with colored or patterned shorts for a summer day trip to the beach or a winery.

Collared sweatshirt t-shirt? Uhhh yes, please. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wanted the white one, BUT since I’ve stained in some way, shape or form almost every pretty white top I have, I’d probably get the black/olive one or the grey/navy one.

I love me some lace yolk tops. This one at Nordstrom is on sale and super pretty. I think the pink though white is super versatile too! Old Navy also has a dress and tank option that are both really pretty and perfect for summer.

May Stitch Fix Reveal

Happy Tuesday y’all!

It’s been a busy week/weekend – we just got back from a whirlwind 24 hours in Boston and nearly 20 hours in the car over 48 hours. Do not recommend driving to Boston for such a short visit but was significantly cheaper than flying so…you do what you gotta do.

A couple weeks ago, I got my May Stitch Fix. Since I’ve been reading up a lot on how to make fixes better and giving more productive feedback about fit and style, my fixes have improved. My issue with Stitch Fix is still prices largely, but it’s always a fun package to receive so I’m going to keep on keeping on with them.

Top: Skies are Blue Leann Lace Blouse | Bottom: Liverpool Anita Skinny pant (petite)

I have these pants in burgundy and a pair in navy (that I only recently realized are not petite length thus…way too long) and they are so comfortable and flattering. I noticed that my favorite Ann Taylor skinny ponte pants are getting worn in the legs, so I mentioned I was looking for a replacement pair of black pants for work – they delivered. Huge win, these pants are most flattering and comfortable. Keep!

The top, I wanted to love. It was a touch too big for me, but I loved the color and style generally but when it came to deciding factor, it was a $58 shirt which is a lot for me to spend on one top (especially since I was getting the pants for definite). I passed on the shirt, but style wise it was on point. Returned.

Top: Blu Pepper Kenward V-Neck Top

I was very ehhhh on this one. I wasn’t in love with the color, and the crochet like detail on the collar was not-exactly work friendly for me. Though the style/shape of the top was okay, I didn’t really love it at all. Returned.

stitch fix scuba dress

Dress: Wisp Mere Lasercut Scuba Dress

Generally, I like A-line dresses. I love ponte style fabrics – I find them flattering and comfortable. I requested to see what they had and they came back with a cute black and white dress in scuba like fabric. It was….okay. The dress itself was comfortable, but a little bit dressier than I was looking for. I wavered back and forth but ultimately, I just wasn’t in love with the dress as much as I wanted to be for the price tag. Returned.

Skirt: Le Lis Maura Zip Pocket Detail Skirt

Skirts are SO hit or miss for me. They’re either too high waisted or they sit wrong and flaunt my mom-gut that I’m still working on getting rid of. This skirt, unfortunately, was no different really. The print was cute, but the way it fell was just…nope, it was too high and the pockets were too awkward. I disliked it so much, I forgot to take a picture. I promise…you’re not missing much.  Returned.

I’d give this month’s fix a 3.5 of 5. Reading up on how to get the most out of your fix has really helped as has joining a couple of styling groups on facebook to see what others are getting to give yourself ideas as well.

Have you tried Stitch Fix yet?  What was your experience like?

April Loves

April is one of my favorite month’s thanks to my birthday. Originally this post full of everything I’m loving lately was scheduled for last week but I just didn’t finish it and have been crazy busy with a work trip to Texas and family in town for Easter since then 🙂 It’s been a busy week to say the least.

So in honor of my birthday last week,  I’m starting a monthly loves post with the five things I’m loving the crap out of.

april loves

  1. 3-week yoga retreat workouts. 30 minute yoga workouts are always a win.
  2. Peep toe cut-out booties. So many heart eye emojis here.
  3. Peplum hem tanks. Dress up, dress down. I have four now.
  4. Old Navy Maxi dress. Because every closet needs a black maxi dress.
  5. Bell sleeve sweater. Not only is it soft, but it’s flattering and perfect for spring. The pink is super pretty but I really, really might need black in my closet too. I originally saw this top on Audrey’s blog – she posted this one too many times and I decided I had to have it 🙂

What are you loving this month?
